A leave may also be initiated by the appropriate supervisor or department chair/director.įamily leaves, which may be limited to 12 weeks in any 12-month period, will be provided if requested for the birth of a child of the employee, the placement of a child with the employee for adoption or foster care, in order to care for a seriously ill member of the employee's immediate family (spouse, son, daughter, or parent), and the extension of a medical leave in which case the 12-week limit may be applied to the entire period of absence.
